Site Overview

The Doryeon 1-dong Association of Families of April 3 Victims was established on February 5, 2007, with the aim of restoring the honor of civilian victims, paying respects to their spirits, and actively participating in the government’s efforts to uncover the truth behind the April 3rd. One year later, in February 2008, the association erected a memorial monument and built an altar at this place.

The land on which the April 3 Memorial Monument was donated by Ko Hee-soo, a Korean in Japan originally from Doryeon 1-dong. A monument honoring him is also located within the Doryeon 1-dong Sports Park. The first April 3 Memorial Service was held on April 2, 2010, and the service has been held annually on April 2 ever since.

Behind the memorial altar sits the Bonhyangdang (Village Shrine) of Doryeon 1-dong.
