Jongnam Village
Site Overview
On November 20, 1948 soldiers from the 9th regiment of the Korean Constalbulary boomed Jongnam Village when the whole of Wasan-ri was scorched in an effort to dislodge the rioters. At the time of the April 3rd Uprising, it was a small village where approximately 50 villagers in 10 dwellings were engaged in agriculture and raising livestock.
After the village was totally burned in accordance with the scorched-earth campaign, villagers who lost their base here were scattered. In spring of 1949, the survivors bult in the shabby collective buildings at the Deaheul Elementary School site and lived 1952, they returned to Wasan and settled. However, Jongnam Village was not rebuilt after being deserted.
Building sites remain in the bamboo forest and traces of the village road and Olle (entrance path to the house) remain to this day. Since ithas not been rebuklt since the April 3rd Uprinsing, fences, traditional Jeju restrooms broken pottery, household artifacts, 2 wells, a water bucket for cattle are evidence of the tragdy of the April 3rd Uprising.
