Site Overview

Gwaneumsa Temple was established in 1909 and it was close to Eoseungseng which used to be a base camp for armed resistance, and therefore, it underwent all sorts of hardships. From March 1949, the 2nd Battalion reinforced its plan to crack down armed resistance and the 2nd Battalion of the 2nd Regiment was stationed at this temple. The “Battle of Gwaneumsa” occured between the armed resistance group and the army. In December 1949, 8 buildings were burnt down by the army.
