Gamnang-Uyeong
Site Overview
It is believed that the name comes from the presence of a large persimmon tree.
According to the Jeju 4·3 Research Institute, on January 10, 1949, government forces stationed in Samyang launched a scorched earth strategy in the Hoecheon-ri area. This was largely an act of retaliation for the armed civilian group's attack on the Samyang Police Station that had taken place around that time. Because the raid was carried out suddenly, the villagers were unable to evacuate in time. As the government force entered the village, the villagers began fleeing hastily toward the southern plain, and many of them were shot and killed by the government force on the road in front of the Gamnang-uyeong monument.
